Dancing can be More Powerful than Antidepressants

We know dancing tango feels great - but why?

Research published recently in the article "Why dancing can be more powerful than antidepressants" published by Natinoal Geographic shows us that moving to music with others reduces symptoms of depression more than walking, yoga, or even standard treatments. For centuries before neuroscientists tracked brainwaves or measured neurotransmitters, dancers understood intuitively how powerful moving together is. Now research is catching up.

Our brains are wired for rhythm - and dancing engages our entire nervous system , both in neurotransmitters and muscle movement. Even anticipating a melody can release dopamine. Body movement boosts endorphins. Dancing with others raises oxytocin levels. Together, these three neuro biochemicals create a solid triangle of good mood, social bonding, and stress reduction. The combination of physical movement, music, and social interaction makes dance a uniquely powerful tool for mental and cognitive well-being.  Plus, the creativity in dance can channel emotions that are difficult to express verbally, offering an outlet for emotional expression and healing.

Perhaps most importantly, research suggests that people are more likely to stick with dance programs than with other exercise routines, ensuring long-term health benefits. The physical exercise of dance improves memory and strengthens neuronal connections.

So enjoy a tango tanda or two, for your health!
