The legendary tango dancer MarÃa Nieves Rego (September 6, 1934 – April 19, 2026) passed away on Sunday, Apr 19, 2026, age 91. She was an Argentine tango dancer and choreographer who starred with her long time dance partner Juan Carlos Copes bringing tango, from the 1950s onward, out of reclusion and onto the world stage. Notably, she and Copes starred in the 1983 musical Tango Argentino.
The 2015 documentary film Un Tango Más (English title: "Our Last Tango") by German Kral depicts the sometimes difficult relationship between Nieves and Copes, who were married for 10 years during their 40+ years as dance partners. Nieves attributes her improvement as an artist to the strong emotions shared between the two dancers.
Maria reshaped Argentine tango both how it was danced and who it was for. Together, with Copes, they transformed tango from not just a social, neighborhood dance but into a theatrical art form that could fill major stages without losing its emotional core, helping to ignite the global tango revival. Touring shows like Tango Argentino reintroduced tango to new generations and cultures.
Individually, MarÃa Nieves embodied a new image of the tango woman—independent, expressive, stylish, and emotionally open—at a time when female dancers were often expected to be decorative or restrained. Her musicality, grounded elegance, and unapologetic personal presence influenced how followers expressed themselves, emphasizing connection and feeling over pure technicality. MarÃa Nieves became a symbol of longevity, resilience, and authenticity in tango. She continued dancing, teaching, and inspiring well into later life, quietly redefining what it means to belong in tango at every age as a full human being.
Nieves offered a simple explanation for her success: "The first time I danced the tango, it entered my skin through my feet, passed from my skin to my blood and through my blood to my heart. It requires no acrobatics, you simply have to devote yourself to your heartbeat."
