2025 Mundial de Tango: Tango de Pista champions Aldana Silveyra & Diego Ortega

Mundial de Tango is the official name for the annual Tango World Championship, held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, as part of the Buenos Aires Tango Festival. It features dance competitions in two main categories—Tango de Pista (salon or social tango) and Tango Escenario (stage tango). This competition attracts hundreds of couples from around the globe. The festival also includes concerts, tango dance classes, exhibitions, and other activities, making it a celebration of tango culture.

The world championship is the final leg of a series of preliminary competitions held throughout the year in cities worldwide. Winning couples are selected in the two categories by a panel of expert judges through multiple rounds of competition. The tournament is structured in three stages: a Qualifying Round, a Semifinal, and a Final, where the winning couples of the Semiginal round perform their final dances, and the winners are chosen.

For Tango de Pista (Dance Floor Tango), the judges prioritize the following elements of traditional, social style tango. Judges assess each couple for: 

• Style: musicality, elegance, improvisation, walking, floorcraft connecting to others on trh dance floor, and overall connection as they move counterclockwise around the dance floor.

• Embrace: The embrace must be kept constant and cannot be broken, though some flexibility is permitted for certain figures.

• Movement: Couples must constantly move, avoiding remaining in the same spot for too long.

• Prohibited moves: Acrobatics, jumps, and lifts are strictly prohibited.

Stage Tango (Tango Escenario) is judged by other criteria, including jumps, lifts, aerial movements, and choreography.
