About Meg
Meg Crosby has been dancing tango for 25 years. She began her training at the (now-closed)
Tango...Nada Más, a tango school in Chicago. It was there that she had the opportunity to study
with many distinguished Milongueros, including Gavito; Nito and Elba; Leandro Palou and Andrea
Missé; and Oswaldo Zotto. She danced with Zotto and remembers that his embrace felt
like velvet. As she recalls, he had a light, gentle touch and yet, he had complete control. From
him she discovered that a follower may not remember the steps a leader leads, but the memory of
a good embrace is never forgotten.
In 2000 she joined the newly established Milwaukee Tango, and she has been an active member
of the community ever since. For many years she took classes from Marek Szotkowski and Nina
Tatarowicz. Currently, she studies with Jacques and María, Jesica Arfenoni, and Maxi Cristiani,
whenever he is in Chicago. She supplements her tango training with weightlifting, a vigorous
Iyengar yoga practice, and multiple, daily walks with Edo, her smooth fox terrier.
Meg holds a Ph.D. in Romance Languages (Spanish and Portuguese) from the University of New
Mexico. For 35 years she taught Spanish language, and Latin American literature and culture
courses at several colleges and universities. She is an avid traveler and has traveled extensively
throughout Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean. She especially likes Argentina and
France.
Meg is honored to facilitate a workshop at Café Coda. She looks forward to sharing her
knowledge of tango, to coaching new and experienced students, and to learning from her fellow
Tangueros/as.
Meg's workshop is followed by The Milonga Matinée from 2 - 5pm at Cafe CODA.

Yes, it's the the International Day of Tango on Dec 11!
Noting this day every year began as a joint birthday celebration for both Carlos Gardel, the most famous and beloved Argentine Tango singers ever, and Julio De Caro, one of the most influential tango composers and orchestra conductors. Both of these tango greats had birthdays on December 11.
In 1965, the idea of the celebration was proposed to the Buenos Aires Secretary of Culture. Eleven years passed before the idea became a reality, and now "11 December" is recognized by tanguer@s everywhere.
Carlos Gardel (born Charles Romuald Gardès; 11 December 1890 – 24 June 1935) was a French-Argentine singer, songwriter, composer and actor, and the most prominent figure in the history of tango. Gardel's baritone voice and the dramatic phrasing of his lyrics made masterpieces of his tango recordings. Gardel collaboratively wrote several classic tangos; amongst his most famous works are Mi Buenos Aires Querido (1934), Por una cabeza (1935), and Volver (1934). Gardel died in a plane crash at the height of his career and was mourned throughout Latin America. Even though his music is not played for dancing, for many, Gardel embodies the soul of tango style.
Julio De Caro (11 December 1899 - 11 March 1980) was a violinist, leader and composer. Out of his enormous work, De Caro composed or co-composed these notable classic tangos: “Boedo”, “Tierra querida”, “Copacabana (Nido de Amor)”, “El monito”, “Guardia vieja”, “La rayuela”, “Mala junta”, “Mala pinta”, “Orgullo criollo”, “Tiny” and “Todo corazón”.

On July 9, 1816 all the congressmen from the provinces of Argentina congregated in Tucumán and declared Argentina’s Independence as its own country. That is the reason for honoring “9 de Julio” as Argentina's birthday in songs and place names .

August 25th is Uruguay's National Day and marks Uruguay's independence from Brazil in 1825. Know as 'Día de la Independencia', this day is celebrated as a public holiday in the Oriental Republic of Uruguay.
The Story
The region now known as Uruguay lay on the Eastern bank ('Banda Oriental') of the River Plate and had passed through English, Spanish, Portuguese and Brazilian control in a short period at the start of the nineteenth century.. When Brazil gained its independence from Portugal in 1822., Banda Oriental had become a province of Brazil.
On August 25th 1825, following a short period of rebellion, Uruguay declared its independence from Brazil. This instigated the Argentina-Brazil War. The conflict lasted until August 1828, when the British negotiated a resolution that led to Brazil recognizing Uruguay's independence.
Why is this important to Tango?
We celebrate, because Uruguay had a profound influence on tango - the roots of tango and many great orquesta leaders and musicians were from Uruguay.
Tango originated in the 1880s along the River Plata, the natural border between Argentina and Uruguay, which separates the two capital cities Buenos Aires and Montevideo. Some historians say that the Tango rhythm has its roots in the poor areas of Montevideo c. 1880, that tango was "born in the San Felipe Academy [Montevideo], a Montevidean warehouse used for public dances."
These famous tango musicians are from Uruguay:
Even the famous tango La Cumparsita which is often traditionally played as the last song of a milonga, was composed in 1919 by the Uruguayan musician Gerardo Matos Rodríguez.
So tango dancers have many reasons to celebrate Uruguay on its independence day, August 25th.
¡Salud Uruguay!

MTS will be Dancin' in the Park and will provide a beginning lesson, and we'll dance on the beautifully refinished wood floors both before and after the lesson.

MTS is very pleased to have Antonio Testolin of Tango Basico joined by his long-time dance partner Jessica Penning share their extensive tango knowledge and artistry in this workshop.
Workshop is for both leads and followers.
Jessica Penning has been teaching tango with Antonio and Tango Basico for many years, but also offers private lessons for individuals (both lead and follow roles) or couples at the beginner and intermediate level.
From Antonio:
"I have been teaching and dancing tango for years. When I started to take tango seriously, I lived in Buenos Aires two months at a time, multiple times, and studied intensively with Damian Essel, Pablo Villarraza and Dana Frigoli at DNI Tango Company, one of the most innovative modern tango schools in BA, and Bruno Tombari. In addition, I took many classes with Horacio Godoy. Recently I took a 3-day workshop with Mariano “Chicho” Frumboli and Juana Sepulveda. I have the great fortune to have maintained lifelong friendships with two amazing tango teachers, “Chucky” Romano (teaching in Poland) and Maximiliano Colussi (teaching in Paris), with whom I have taught, performed, exchanged and still in touch with today. I also arranged workshops here in Madison with them."
Taught Workshops
Antonio has organized many workshops in the surrounding area, including with “Chucky” Romano and Maximiliano Colussi, Queer Tango with Astrid Wieske in Tulum Mexico and Pisa Italy

Antonio says: "I love to share Argentine Tango with the Madison community. Jessica Penning and I have been performing for more than 10 years during the Willy Street Fair, as well as other at venues including UW Madison."
Teaching
Antonio says: "I currently teach on Monday evenings. The class is geared to students who have tango experience and can bring a dance partner to train with. The focus of my class is deep exploration of tango concepts like connection, embrace, dissociation, improvisation, and musicality, beyond the basic patterns of particular techniques. "

Workshop Description
Details on Meg's workshop will be shared soon..
About Meg
Meg Crosby has been dancing tango for 25 years. She began her training at the (now-closed)Tango...Nada Más, a tango school in Chicago. It was there that she had the opportunity to studywith many distinguished Milongueros, including Gavito; Nito and Elba; Leandro Palou and AndreaMissé; and Oswaldo Zotto. She danced with Zotto and remembers that his embrace feltlike velvet. As she recalls, he had a light, gentle touch and yet, he had complete control. Fromhim she discovered that a follower may not remember the steps a leader leads, but the memory ofa good embrace is never forgotten.
In 2000 she joined the newly established Milwaukee Tango, and she has been an active memberof the community ever since. For many years she took classes from Marek Szotkowski and NinaTatarowicz. Currently, she studies with Jacques and María, Jesica Arfenoni, and Maxi Cristiani, whenever he is in Chicago. She supplements her tango training with weightlifting, a vigorousIyengar yoga practice, and multiple, daily walks with Edo, her smooth fox terrier.
Meg holds a Ph.D. in Romance Languages (Spanish and Portuguese) from the University of New Mexico. For 35 years she taught Spanish language, and Latin American literature and culture courses at several colleges and universities. She is an avid traveler and has traveled extensively throughout Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean. She especially likes Argentina and France.
Meg is honored to facilitate a workshop at Café Coda. She looks forward to sharing herknowledge of tango, to coaching new and experienced students, and to learning from her fellow Tangueros/as.
Meg's workshop is followed by The Milonga Matinée from 3 - 5pm at Cafe CODA.

Los Compadres del Tango
Although we often think that the bandoneon is the instrument by excellence embodying the tango, we often forget that the flute was one of the first instruments with which this musical style was played. Los Compadres del tango offers you a historical review of tango for flute and piano, evoking the important composers who have marked the porteña music at all times.
Jacques Saint-Cyr is a multidisciplinary artist, flutist, arranger and tango dancer. He holds a MA in music interpretation from the University of Montreal and perfected his skills in France with Raymond Guiot and Christophe Fresh in baroque flute. It was on his return from France that he learned to dance. Since 1996, Jacques has taught tango in Montreal, Rockford IL, Madison and Milwaukee WI. He studied with great Argentine tango masters such as: Pepito and Suzuki Avellaneda, Mingo Pugliese, and Rodolfo Dinzel. Along with his wife María Castello, he performed as a dancer and musician on stages in New Brunswick, Quebec, Washington D.C., Illinois, Wisconsin and Argentina. This program is a symbiosis of what he cherishes: dance and tango music.
Valerie Blair holds a Bachelor’s in Music Education and a Master’s in piano from Northern Illinois University. She has played for local opera and musical theater productions, and voice studios in Chicago and suburbs, and in Buffalo, NY. For four years she taught general music for pre-K through middle school at Spectrum School in Rockford, IL, where she started the area’s first Music Together© Licensed Preschool Program. At the Music Academy of Rockford College she teaches early childhood music and recently launched a music program at the Rosecrance Adolescent Treatment Center. At Rock Valley College she is the accompanist for Chamber Singers and Women’s Choir, as well as for voice students.
The performance and dance social is 3 pm until 5 pm.

instructor John Curran says:
"Because I concentrate on the 'connection' you have with a partner I love Argentine Tango which is quite different from ballroom as it’s more connected / intimate as well as being more improvisational. Originally from Argentina, it was taken to Europe to be “legitimized” by society then brought back. It was banned for years in Argentina but saw a resurgence in the 80’s and is still very popular today. We will concentrate on 5 essential characteristics that make
Argentine Tango (and ALL dance) truly enjoyable."

About Meg
Meg Crosby has been dancing tango for 25 years. She began her training at the (now-closed)Tango...Nada Más, a tango school in Chicago. It was there that she had the opportunity to study with many distinguished Milongueros, including Gavito; Nito and Elba; Leandro Palou and AndreaMissé; and Oswaldo Zotto. She danced with Zotto and remembers that his embrace felt like velvet. As she recalls, he had a light, gentle touch and yet, he had complete control. From him she discovered that a follower may not remember the steps a leader leads, but the memory of a good embrace is never forgotten. In 2000 she joined the newly established Milwaukee Tango, and she has been an active member of the community ever since. For many years she took classes from Marek Szotkowski and Nina Tatarowicz. Currently, she studies with Jacques and María, Jesica Arfenoni, and Maxi Cristiani, whenever he is in Chicago. She supplements her tango training with weightlifting, a vigorous Iyengar yoga practice, and multiple, daily walks with Edo, her smooth fox terrier.

Anna Snider will be teaching two workshops on March 16th. Rather separate classes for leaders and followers, these classes will include both roles together. There will be lots of specific guidance for leads and follows.
You can take the classes individually, but they are designed to build off each other, so why not just block out your afternoon and join us for both! You don't need to come with a partner, we will switch it up.
All workshops are $15/person. They will be in the Mendota Movement Room at the Quarry Arts Building at 715 Hill St, Madison (there is free parking in the garage under the building or at Fresh Mart next door).
Anna says: "I have spots for private or semi-private lessons before and after the workshops. If you want to quickly improve your dancing, consider a semi-private small group class. You get a group of 2-8 people together and I will design a class for you based on what you want to work on and where and when you work on it."
Anna’s motivation for teaching tango is ¡más y mejor! (more and better) tango in Madison and everywhere. She draws upon her background in music (piano, oboe, flute) to bring musicality to her dancing and teaching.
Venmo, Zelle, or cash at the door. Contact Anna at MadisonMilonguera@gmail.com for more information and to register.

Noche de Luna (a moonlit night) Milonga September 13th at Gates of Heaven, James Madison Park, Madison. 5:30-8:45 PM.
DJ Marquis,
$25 before September 7th.
Ryan (my co-host for this event) and I have been talking a lot about what makes a great milonga-- and it's time to put it into practice. We have an amazing venue on the shore of Lake Mendota. Gates of Heaven is a cosy, historic building with wood floors and we are going to fill it up with Marquis' great music and tangueros! We would be delighted if you would join us for a festive evening of dancing and socializing at the end of summer.
Due to park rules, the milonga is in a slightly un-milonguero time slot. But we prefer to think of this as a boon for out of town travelers who want to drive back that night and for those who, like me, prefer to be in their jammies by 10PM.
Have I got you excited?! Are you ready to give me your money!?
Another quirk of dancing in the park-- everyone must pre-register. We can't accept money at the door. So here are the details. You can reserve your spot by sending me your payment ($25/per person) via Venmo (@Anna-Snider-12). In the notes please put your email address and "Milonga Sept 13". Don't have Venmo? You can give me or Ryan Hahn cash at any milonga, practica, workshop or other event and we will get you registered. Need other payment options, send me an email at madisonmilonguera@gmail.com and we will figure something out.

Carols Di Sarli - El Señor del Tango
Di Sarli (1903–1960) earned the nickname El Señor del Tango (“The Lord of Tango”), a title that reflected not only his elegant musical style but also his reserved, dignified stage presence. Often spotted behind a pair of dark glasses, Di Sarli cut a distinctive figure: a refined pianist, a successful orchestra leader, and a composer whose work remains essential in the traditional tango canon.
Born on January 7, 1903, in Bahía Blanca, southern Argentina, Di Sarli was christened Cayetano Di Sarli. His father, Miguel, was an Italian immigrant and owner of a local gun shop. His mother, Serafina Russomano, came from a family of musicians (her father Tito had been a tenor). Music ran through the family, with one brother becoming a music teacher, one a singer, and Roque, the youngest, a pianist like Carlos himself.
A pivotal moment came when Carlos, at age 13, lost an eye in a firearms accident at his father’s store. From that point on, he always wore dark-tinted glasses… part necessity, part mystique. It was a traumatic injury, but it didn’t derail his musical path.
Much to the dismay of his family and piano teacher, Di Sarli ran off with a zarzuela troupe to join the theatrical life on tour. In the years that followed, Di Sarli found work playing piano for silent films in La Pampa province before returning to Bahía Blanca. At just 16, he debuted as a band leader in a local café called Café Express. His group briefly toured the provinces, but in 1923, Carlos and Roque made the inevitable move to Buenos Aires.
Di Sarli worked with several orchestras, most notably playing for Osvaldo Fresedo, whose refined, urbane style left a permanent mark on Di Sarli’s musical vocabulary. In 1927 Carlos formed his own ensemble — a sextet that would, over time, lay the groundwork for his signature sound. He recorded extensively in the late 1920s and early ’30s, but after several interruptions and lineup changes, he temporarily stepped away from leading his own group.
In 1938 Di Sarli returned to Buenos Aires with renewed focus. He reorganized his orchestra and, in 1939, began recording again. He released one record in 1939: the song Corazón on the A-side and the instrumental piece Retirao on the B-side.
With “Corazón”, you can hear (and feel) D’Arienzo’s driving style that had influenced all tango artists in the 1930s. But in Roberto Rufino’s vocals and Di Sarli himself at the piano, Di Sarli’s unique style and elegance already shines through. A style that will allow Di Sarli’s career to climb to new heights, and a style whose influence on tango music and tango dance still reverberates today.
📷 How to recognize the music of Carlos Di Sarli:
With “Corazón” ("Heart"), featuring Roberto Rufino’s vocals and Di Sarli himself at the piano, we can still feel the 1930s influence: it’s crisper and less expansive than his later work. Even so, Di Sarli’s unique style already shines through unmistakably.
“Corazón” from December 1939:
Lyrics
-----------------------------------
Heart, you are deceiving me… Heart, why are you crying? You don’t see that I’m dying to your rhythm, from this pain.
Though you know that she’s no longer mine, that she has surrendered to another’s arms, try not to faint yet, be as firm as I am.
Give me a strong beat because I want to uproot this flower of forgetting that she has tried to plant upon my sorrow.
Heart, don’t call to her don’t beg her for anything—you have never deserved so much humiliation from the ones you love.
I believe in God and in life, with all its twists and turns. I know that they will bring her on her knees to my door to beg for forgiveness.

Juan D'Arienzo - El Rey de Compas (b. Dec 14, 1900, d. Jan 14, 1976)
By 1938, the orchestra of Juan D'Arienzo had reached the peak of its popularity. D'Arienzo was only 35 years old at the time. His records were selling well, and his orchestra was frequently featured on the radio. But audiences were becoming increasingly enthusiastic about his pianist, Rodolfo Biagi.
At a concert later that year, after a performance of the vals “Lágrimas y Sonrisas”, the crowd clapped insistently—until Biagi finally stood up and bowed. As the story goes, D’Arienzo walked over, leaned in, and whispered: “I’m the only star in this orchestra. You’re fired.”
With Biagi's departure, D'Arienzo brought on another exceptional pianist: Juan Polito.
But this golden era of talent didn't last either…
In early 1940, Juan Polito parted ways with D’Arienzo—and took the entire orchestra with him, including the singer Echagüe.
It seemed as if the D’Arienzo orchestra was finished. But in response, D’Arienzo quickly persuaded bandoneonist Héctor Varela to help him assemble a new orchestra. Among their recruits were the young pianist Fulvio Salamanca, only 18 years old at the time, and the well-known violinist Cayetano Puglisi (not related to Osvaldo Pugliese). After several rehearsals, they also brought in a new singer: Héctor Mauré.
Mauré’s voice was smooth and nuanced—not as gritty and streetwise as Echagüe’s. At first, it wasn’t clear whether he would suit D’Arienzo’s driving, beat-heavy style. But they found common ground: the orchestra kept its rhythmic force but slowed the tempo slightly and adopted more refined, melodically complex arrangements to match Mauré’s style.
The result was a resounding success: Between 1940 and 1944, they recorded 50 songs, many of which remain beloved by dancers to this day—including “Nunca Más”, “El Olivo”, “Tierrita” and many more.
The tango “Dime mi amor” was recorded in 1941 for the film “Yo quiero ser bataclana” (“I Want to Be a Showgirl”), with lyrics written by the film’s director Manuel Romero. The film starred the famous actress and comedienne Niní Marshall—and Juan D'Arienzo also appears in the movie, playing (of course…) himself.
"Dime mi Amor“ from the year 1941:
Lyrics
-----------------------------------
To the sleepy rhythm of our tango, with my arm wrapped around your waist, I whisper a thousand words of affection, and catch a glimpse of a thousand skies of joy. I long to know if there’s still, in your heart, a hope that lives on for me—if absence and distance haven’t erased the love I once glimpsed in your eyes.
Tell me, my love, tell me, my love, do you still care for me? Has absence not killed your desire? Can I still believe, as I did yesterday? Tell me, my love, tell me, my love, do you still prefer the heart I offer you now in my sorrowful song?
I long to know if there’s still, in your heart, a hope that lives on for me—if absence and distance haven’t erased the love
I once glimpsed in your eyes.

Lauren's workshop is followed by The Milonga Matinée 3 - 5 pm, which Lauren will DJ a mix of traditional tango and some alternativo/nuevo too.

It's a pop-up milonga, hosted by Anna Snider and Ryan Hahn. Anna and Ryan say: We found the perfect spot (and we've kinda outdone ourselves)! We’re thrilled to announce a pop-up milonga at Eno Vino Downtown ...
For five little dollars, you can glide across the floor under the sparkling gaze of the Wisconsin State Capitol Dome.
Yes, it’s short notice. Yes, it’s a week night. But come on—when has that ever stopped a tango dancer? Just show up ready for an evening of wine, laughter, and warm embraces.
Location:
Eno Vino 9th Floor Lounge at the AC hotel
One N Webster St.
Madison,
(one block off the Square.)
Take the elevator up to the 10th floor, order your drink (I recommend the Cava to put you in a celebratory mood) or food at the bar, and proceed down the stairs to the lounge. We don't have a server dedicated to the lounge, so please order everything upstairs.
Please pay Anna or Ryan by cash, Venmo, Zelle, etc.
Street parking is free after 6:00, or the Capitol Square North Garage is one block away on Mifflin. The dance floor is intimate, so floorcraft is required. Also, help us out and work on your smooth tango walk-- if hotel guests on the 8th floor complain of a herd of tap dancing elephants from the floor above, this will be our first and last milonga here.
We can't wait to see you!

Start your holiday celebrations at the MTS Holiday Milonga! We are delighted to have DJ Tony D to play holiday-infused music and cortinas for December fun!
