Los Compadres del Tango
Although we often think that the bandoneon is the instrument by excellence embodying the tango, we often forget that the flute was one of the first instruments with which this musical style was played. Los Compadres del tango offers you a historical review of tango for flute and piano, evoking the important composers who have marked the porteña music at all times.
Jacques Saint-Cyr is a multidisciplinary artist, flutist, arranger and tango dancer. He holds a MA in music interpretation from the University of Montreal and perfected his skills in France with Raymond Guiot and Christophe Fresh in baroque flute. It was on his return from France that he learned to dance. Since 1996, Jacques has taught tango in Montreal, Rockford IL, Madison and Milwaukee WI. He studied with great Argentine tango masters such as: Pepito and Suzuki Avellaneda, Mingo Pugliese, and Rodolfo Dinzel. Along with his wife MarÃa Castello, he performed as a dancer and musician on stages in New Brunswick, Quebec, Washington D.C., Illinois, Wisconsin and Argentina. This program is a symbiosis of what he cherishes: dance and tango music.
Valerie Blair holds a Bachelor’s in Music Education and a Master’s in piano from Northern Illinois University. She has played for local opera and musical theater productions, and voice studios in Chicago and suburbs, and in Buffalo, NY. For four years she taught general music for pre-K through middle school at Spectrum School in Rockford, IL, where she started the area’s first Music Together© Licensed Preschool Program. At the Music Academy of Rockford College she teaches early childhood music and recently launched a music program at the Rosecrance Adolescent Treatment Center. At Rock Valley College she is the accompanist for Chamber Singers and Women’s Choir, as well as for voice students.
The performance and dance social is 3 pm until 5 pm.
