An all-levels tango class with Jacques Saint-Cyr and Maria Castello, this class offers something for everyone, from the new dancer to the experienced.
About Jacques and Maria
Jacques Saint-Cyr obtained a B.A. in music education from the University of Québec in Montreal and a M.A. in flute performance from University of Montréal. He became involved with Tango in 1993. His major influences are Suzuki and Pepito Avellaneda with whom he studied in 1995, Rodolfo Dinzel and Mingo Pugliese with whom he studied each summer in Buenos Aires beginning in 1997. From 1996 to 2003, Jacques Saint-Cyr taught, choreographed and performed at La Tangueria in Montréal, one of the first and most renowned places dedicated to Argentine tango of the city. Jacques has worked as a guest teacher in many cities across North America including Québec, Chicoutimi, Ottawa and Washington, Champaign-Urbana, Purdue and Madison. In 2001, he participated in the production of the film Macadam Tango that has been presented in television by Radio-Canada and TV5 (the international French television network).
Jacques’ interest in tango took him to research and study the development of tango music. Jacques offers in his teaching his expertise in tango music and his knowledge of music pedagogy applied to dance.
MarÃa E Castello graduated from the National School of Dance and the School of Medicine in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She is a Laban/Bartenieff Movement Analyst. She has always been interested in dance in all its forms. Parallel to her career in ballet and contemporary dance, she joined the Argentina Folk Ballet directed by Nora and Raul Dinzelbacher, performing with this folklore-tango company in Argentina, Brazil and U.S.A. from 1980 to 1988. She has studied with Pepito Avellanada and Suzuki de Souza. Since 1997 she has been studying under the direction of Mingo Pugliese and Rodolfo Dinzel. From 1985 to 1990, MarÃa lived in the Washington Metropolitan area. She performed and presented her own work at Dance Place, Public Playhouse and the Kennedy Center Terrace Theater among other performing centers.
While in Montréal, Canada, Maria was a founder of La Tangueria. She has taught tango at the University of Montreal and the University of Québec in Chicoutimi. She performed and choreographed tango in collaboration with the ensembles Musica Camerata, Tangando and Quartango from Montréal.
In her teaching, MarÃa integrates her experience, her artistic and scientific knowledge about movement and her love for dance. MarÃa was the School Director of Rockford Dance Company from 1996 to 2004. MarÃa has conducted many outreach programs for the Latin community in collaboration with La Voz Latina, Nashold School and with the Rockford Art Museum. She is also the Artistic Director of the Without Shoes Modern Dance Company.
